We’re delighted to be able to share the exciting news that Tithe Green Natural Burial has been named as the UK’s Best Natural Burial Ground at the 2025 Good Funeral Awards ceremony hosted by the Association of Green Funeral Directors (AGFD).

In choosing Tithe Green for this prestigious award, AGFD cited the ‘dignified and meaningful alternative to traditional funerals’ we were providing for those using our woodland and wildflower sites at Oxton in Nottinghamshire, Ketton in Rutland and Markfield in Leicestershire.

Meanwhile, nomination forms submitted by customers and commercial partners included the following comments:

“Tithe Green Natural Burial is truly setting a remarkable standard for natural burial grounds.”

“With a focus on simplicity and environmental responsibility, Tithe Green offers a natural alternative that feels authentic and lasting, helping families find comfort in a place that truly values nature.”

“Their passion for what they do shines through in everything – from their personalised support for each family to their ability to meet modern needs while staying warm and approachable.”

We were one of the first to offer natural burial grounds as a viable alternative to traditional funerals, and it’s always exciting to see at these events just how far the industry has developed in the intervening years.

What is the Association of Green Funeral Directors (AGFD)?

The Association of Green Funeral Directors (AGFD) is a non-profit organisation that was established in 2009 with three goals:

  • To help people to find sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to traditional funerals
  • To encourage funeral companies to adopt more sustainable and eco-friendly practices and help to bring natural burial into the mainstream
  • To recognise those in the green funeral business who are offering the best services to the public with an annual awards ceremony

The AGFD has a code of practice its members have to follow, so that the public who engage them can be confident that they’re getting the services of a company that takes green alternatives to traditional funerals seriously. This includes a commitment to offering eco-friendly choices like woodland burials and biodegradable coffins and urns.

What are The Good Funeral Awards?

The Good Funeral Awards – which this year took place at the National Space Centre near Leicester – recognise and reward the country’s leading people and businesses operating in the UK’s growing green funeral industry.

Apart from Best Natural Burial Ground, which was won by our team at Tithe Green, categories awarded on the night included:

  • Crematorium of the Year
  • Low Cost Funeral Provider
  • Pet Funeral Provider of the Year
  • Coffin Supplier of the Year
  • Funeral Director of the Year
  • And many more!

Thanking the community

In accepting the award, Tithe Green co-owner James O’Connell was as keen to acknowledge the help and support of our local communities as he was the rest of the Tithe Green team.

“We’d like to thank everyone who has been part of the Tithe Green journey – families, friends, and our wonderful community. This award belongs to all of us.”

James O’Donnell

In their years of use as natural burial grounds, our sites have become a place where families can find peace, comfort and connection with nature when saying goodbye to their loved ones. This award shines a light on the care, thoughtfulness and dedication that go into making every burial a personal and meaningful experience.
