How are graves marked?

Graves at Tithe Green are marked either with a memorial plaque or a memorial tree and plaque.

Instead of a tombstone, we plant a tree as part of every woodland burial, placing a small Welsh slate plaque with an inscription at the foot of the tree.

In our wildflower meadow settings we place plaques instead of trees, but we can plant a tree in nearby woodland. We can also plant a memorial tree without a burial taking place.

What is the difference between a memorial plaque and a gravestone?

Our memorial plaques are made from natural Welsh slate and represent a gentle, unobtrusive marker within the landscape. Gravestones are usually made from large pieces of stone, such as granite, marble or sandstone. They’re also much larger and far more prominent than memorial plaques, meaning they tend to dominate the landscape in which they are placed.

Where can I place a memorial plaque?

Your memorial plaque can either be placed on the site of the burial or ashes interment, or under the memorial tree.

Do I have to purchase a plaque when planting a memorial tree?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we ask that all trees have a plaque. This not only helps families to locate the grave they are looking for, but it also helps us should there be any issue with the tree at any point in the future.

What details should I include on a memorial plaque?

Accepted Answer

It’s common to include the full name together with their dates of birth and death. You’ll also have room to include a personal message or quotation.

How many words or characters can I have on a memorial plaque?

Accepted Answer

There is space for up to 40 words on a grave plaque and 30 words on a memorial tree plaque.

Will I be able to review the plaque design before it’s made?

Accepted Answer

Once you’ve confirmed the inscription text for the plaque you have ordered, we will email you a design mock-up to check you’re happy with how it looks. We’ll ask for your confirmation and approval before sending on to the stonemason for completion.

Can I order a memorial plaque from Tithe Green for my own use or use elsewhere?

Of course you can; our memorial plaques can be viewed and ordered here. Please note that postage and packaging are included in the quoted price and that our personalised memorial plaques require approximately eight weeks to create once approved.

What trees can I choose from to plant at Tithe Green?

Accepted Answer

At Tithe Green you can choose from the following trees:

Beech
Wild cherry
Lime
Crab Apple
Rowan
Hazel
Whitebeam

You can still plant a memorial tree at our sites, even if there isn’t a burial.

Question 10

Are the memorial trees planted all year round?

Accepted Answer

Trees are best planted during the winter months, when they get naturally well watered and can put their efforts into establishing themselves and growing their roots, rather than growing leaves and blossom.
